A back spasm may affect movement when you feel tight muscle contractions. The upper, middle, and lower back muscles are divided into three types: intrinsic/deep muscles, superficial muscles and intermediate muscles. Although any muscle can contract, lower back spasms are more common and can start with no warning as a mild cramp that builds to unbearable pain.
An external force on the muscles induces the known causes of back spasms. It can cause stress, strain, or injury to the bones, facet joints, spinal cord, spinal ligaments, intervertebral discs, spinal nerves, or paraspinal muscles.
Back spasms often occur when strain is put on the back muscles, tendons or ligaments. Back spasms may indicate an existing medical condition that causes inflammation in the spine and surrounding tissues.
A back spasm is commonly felt in the lower back as it supports your body weight but can occur anywhere along the spine. If you experience any of the following symptoms of back spasms, see your healthcare provider without further delay-
