Back Sprain 101

The back, especially the lower back, bears most of the body's weight during walking, lifting, running, and other activities. Back sprain is a common cause of backache; almost everyone experiences such pain at some point in life. Ligament injuries are called sprains.

Back Sprain Cause

Strains can be an effect of a severe problem like a bone fracture. While that is undoubtedly a more serious problem that needs to be treated, healing the inflammation that comes with the sprain is equally essential. It allows the body to focus on treating the bone fracture instead of the inflammation and gives the patient significant relief. Causes of sprains include:

  • Lifting heavy objects or intensive weight training
  • Overexertion
  • Accidents like falling, tripping
  • Improper form when walking or running
  • Injuries from contact sports
  • Muscle weakness in the distressful leg or foot
  • A pain in the butt or leg due to prolonged sitting
  • Tingling sensation in lower body
  • Numbness in leg or foot
  • Pain down the leg, which makes it difficult to stand up or extend the knee

Back Sprain Symptoms

Regular repetitive movements often cause back strain or if the body is inactive for longer. These changes can affect the muscles' flexibility, resulting in back sprains. A sudden inflammation or acute pain without major warning or cause may indicate that the sprain is pressing on nerves around the joints. If left untreated, it may lead to serious complications. Common symptoms of strains will include:

  • Mild to moderate muscle spasms
  • Mild to moderate pain around the joint
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • General lack of flexibility
  • Challenging in moving around the affected joint
